There are many species of mint, but the type most often used in teas is Mentha x piperita, known colloquially as good isma. As described in one of the encyclopedias1, Mentha x piperita is, in fact, a hybrid species, a cross between the species Mentha aquatica and Mentha spicata. The latter is also known as "common mint" and is mainly used in gastronomy.

Therefore, it is important not to confuse the two most commonly used types of mint for human consumption. In English, the distinction is easier to make; Mentha spicata is called spearmint, while Mentha x piperita (the one we are discussing in this article) is called peppermint.

When discussing the healthiest foods, fruits and vegetables are often at the top of the list due to their vitamins, minerals and antioxidant capacity. Fresh herbs are quite often forgotten, but they can be just as important to a healthy diet as fruits and vegetables, offering a wide range of health benefits.

Mint has one of the highest antioxidant capacities and therefore it is useful to learn how to use it to reduce sodium intake in the body.

Mint benefits

Allergies: The mint plant contains an antioxidant known as rosmarinic acid, which has been studied for its effectiveness in relieving the symptoms of seasonal allergies. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, rosmarinic acid has been shown to be a promising treatment.

Common colds: Peppermint contains menthol, which is a natural decongestant that helps break up phlegm and mucus. Mint can also be effective for relieving sore throats.

Indigestion: Mint is a calming and soothing herb, which has been used for a long time in the treatment of gastric disorders and indigestion. Mint accelerates and eases digestion.

Irritable bowel syndrome: Peppermint supplements have also been shown to be effective in treating abdominal pain and discomfort associated with irritable bowel syndrome.
