Also known as pojarnita, sundew (Hypericum perforatum) is among the plants frequently used for therapeutic purposes. It is most often taken as a tea, but most of its benefits are also found in capsules. Thanks to the active principles it contains, sunflower is used to relieve many symptoms and improve health.

WHAT SUNFLOWER CONTAINS

Among the main compounds contained in sunnacea is hypericin, an active ingredient that studies have shown to have antiseptic, antiviral and antidepressant properties. Sunflower is also rich in hyperforin, another substance known for its antidepressant, antibacterial and soothing properties.

In fact, sunflower has been included in several studies dedicated to depression, and research indicates that, in certain doses, its effects may be similar to those of standard antidepressant drugs.

Moreover, sunflower is rich in flavonoids, tannins and catechin, antioxidant active principles with an important role in the body's defence. In addition, it contains chlorogenic acid and volatile oils, with soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as saponins, known for their antibacterial qualities.

Last but not least, studies speak of the importance of macerated sunflower oil ( Hyperici oleum). It is obtained by macerating sunflower flowers in sunflower or olive oil in a sunny place for two to three weeks. Sunflower oil is a traditional remedy in the Balkan area, helping to relieve wounds and injuries due to its antibacterial properties.
