Glucomannan is an extract of konjac (Amorphophallus konjac) and is a source of beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber. Soluble fibers help regulate intestinal transit, regulate blood sugar and increase nutrient absorption. While glucomannan is rich in dietary fiber, it is very low in calories and almost zero in protein and vitamin content.

It can reduce cholesterol and blood sugar

Glucomannan forms a layer around the food in the digestive tract, inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol and bile acids. Because glucomannan causes a slower emptying of the stomach and delays the absorption of glucose in the intestines, it has beneficial effects on the level of glucose in the blood.
The use of glucomannan as a supplement has been shown to reduce blood glucose and cholesterol levels in healthy people as well as in those with diabetes. This reduction is due to the slow emptying of the stomach which leads to higher rates of nutrient absorption by the small intestine, increasing insulin sensitivity. The slower absorption of sugars means a lower rise in blood sugar, an essential factor in diabetes control.

It can be beneficial in constipation

Soluble fibers like those found in glucomannan improve digestion. The recommended intake of dietary fiber is approximately 25 to 30 grams per day, with 6 to 8 grams of soluble fiber.
Glucomannan is an excellent source of soluble fiber, making it a wise choice to help treat chronic constipation. A teaspoon of glucomannan powder contains 4 grams of fiber.
Another way glucomannan can help relieve constipation is through its prebiotic properties. It has been shown that glucomannan stimulates the growth of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. It has been shown that the growth of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli due to glucomannan intake improves intestinal peristalsis.

It can help with weight management

As a potential aid for weight loss, glucomannan has the ability to create volume which, in turn, produces feelings of fullness. These feelings of satiety can then lead to a reduced caloric intake. It is also a source of soluble fiber that slows down the absorption of sugar and cholesterol and helps digestion.
To achieve this, glucomannan forms a protective film on the intestinal wall that prolongs the retention time of food in the stomach, increases the feeling of satiety and reduces hunger. It also has a low calorie content, which makes it an effective aid for weight loss.
