Yucca is a shrub native to Central and South America, often used as an ornamental plant and whose stem has medicinal and gastronomic properties. The yucca stem is the third largest source of carbohydrates in the world, and this is because this plant needs very little water to grow, which allows it to grow in almost any conditions. The yucca stem is very similar in taste and shape to the traditional potato.

One of the greatest benefits of yucca stem is its antioxidant content. Antioxidants are chemical compounds that remove dangerous waste products (free radicals) from the human body. When free radicals accumulate in the body they cause a condition called oxidative stress which leads to more serious diseases such as diabetes, inflammation, heart disease and even cancer.

Yucca contains an impressive number of carbohydrates and bioactive substances such as vitamin A, B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. The main active chemical compounds of the yucca stem are represented by saponin, which together with the other substances in its composition, give this plant antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Yucca powder contains fibre, which improves digestion so that sugar enters the bloodstream at a steady rate, giving the body energy for longer. Fibre also helps prevent cardiovascular disease. Including Yucca in your diet also means providing a moderate dose of vitamin C, essential for a healthy immune system. Yucca also contains potassium, which helps balance sodium in the body to maintain normal blood pressure. In addition, potassium activates enzymes in the body to better digest carbohydrates in food.

Benefits of Yucca

  • Protects against oxidative stress
Because it is rich in antioxidants, Yucca has the ability to neutralize free radicals to prevent oxidative stress that damages our cellular system. Medical studies have shown that antioxidants play an important role in our well-being and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. Yucca also contains a dose of vitamin C and manganese, two micronutrients that help minimise oxidative stress.
  • Supports immune functions
A strong immune system is the key to overall well-being. The immune system is responsible for defending against bacteria, viruses or fungal infections. Vitamin C from Yucca strain has a positive impact on the immune response, shortening the duration of respiratory infections or relieving symptoms of pneumonia or infectious diarrhoea.
  • Maintains skin health
Yucca stem is an ingredient used in many skin care products because it helps collagen synthesis and prevents premature skin ageing. Moreover, Yucca regulates the body's production of melanin and thus prevents the appearance of brown spots on the skin or hyperpigmentation of the skin.
  • Relieves arthritis symptoms
Arthritis is a disease characterised by swelling and locking of the joints. Thanks to its antioxidant and manganese content, Yucca reduces joint inflammation and eases the pain experienced by sufferers.
  • Reduces bad cholesterol levels and prevents atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis occurs inside the artery wall due to blood thickening and cholesterol accumulation. Yucca contains fibre and antioxidants that have the ability to reduce cholesterol levels and prevent it from penetrating the artery wall.
