What is riboflavin?
Riboflavin is a water-soluble vitamin that was discovered in 1879, when it was described as a yellow pigment present in milk . Riboflavin is found naturally in animal and vegetable products and is also available in the form of food supplements.
Riboflavin is the precursor of some enzymes: flavinic mononucleotide (FAD) and flavinic dinucleotide (FMN), which are involved in vital oxidation reactions for mammalian cells .
Although considered rare on the globe, vitamin B2 deficiency is endemic in some areas of the world. Recent research demonstrates that the metabolic roles of riboflavin are varied, which has brought vitamin B2 back into the interest of scientists.
What is the role of riboflavin (vitamin B2) in the body
Riboflavin is involved in an important number of metabolic processes in the human body:
- It contributes to the decomposition and metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, having an essential role in energy production;
- It helps to metabolize carbohydrates into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), vital for storing energy inside the muscle fiber;

- It contributes to the absorption and use of other vitamins and minerals: iron, folic acid, vitamins B1, B3 and B6;
- It participates in the hormonal syntheses initiated by the adrenal glands;
- It could be involved in the prevention of cataracts and migraines.
