Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is the pigment that gives plants their green color. It supports plants in the absorption of energy and nutrients by filtering sunlight, in the process called photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is found in most green plants and vegetables, and some people take chlorophyll as a supplement or topical ointment. Chlorophyll benefits include increasing energy levels, speeding up wound healing, and fighting certain ailments.

Several studies suggest that topical application of chlorophyll, in the form of an ointment, may promote faster wound healing. The use of chlorophyll for its healing properties has its origins in very old research, as far back as 1950. Certain doctors still prescribe topical chlorophyll-based medicines, more precisely with the active substance called chlorophyllin, to speed up wound healing but also to reduce unpleasant odors associated with open wounds.

Topical chlorophyll has also been used in various clinical trials1 as an alternative acne treatment with promising results. Chlorophyll can also be beneficial in reducing the signs of photoaging, which can occur from prolonged exposure to the sun. Last but not least, according to several studies2, topically applied chlorophyll could have a protective role against skin cancer, thanks to its antioxidant properties.
