Betaine is a substance normally extracted from sugar beet or sugar cane, which can be used for therapeutic purposes in two forms: Betaine anhydrous and Betaine HCl. The two forms of betaine have different applications, Betaine HCl being a modified form of betaine anhydrous.

Betaine anhydrous (also known as trimethylglycine or TMG) is a compound that is used to eliminate fats from the body, especially from the liver. It can be synthesized in the body or assimilated from food. In the case of people with metabolic disorders, it is used to facilitate the elimination of homocysteine. This is a substance that accumulates in the body of people who cannot metabolize methionine (an essential amino acid with a role in liver detoxification) into cysteine (a non-essential amino acid, with a role in liver detoxification and eye protection).

Betaine HCl is only found in pharmaceutical preparations and supplements, as it cannot be synthesized by the human body. It has the role of increasing acidity in the stomach (hydrochloric acid in the stomach has an anti-infective role and activates certain enzymes, such as pepsin).
