The daily intake of Vitamin D3 from the natural source, with increased absorption, to support immunity, bone, muscular & endocrine systems.

Jarrow Formulas® vitamin D3 provides cholecalciferol, which is more biologically active than ergocalciferol (D2). Vitamin D3 is ultimately converted to its hormonally active form, calcitriol, in the kidneys. Calcitriol improves dietary absorption of calcium and phosphorus, stimulates the synthesis of osteocalcin (an important structural protein in bones) and supports a healthy immune response.

Vitamin D is known as the "sunshine vitamin", because it is produced during exposure to the sun's rays, but it is also found naturally in certain foods, being beneficial for maintaining bone health. In the following, we will find out what are all the benefits of vitamin D, what are the causes of vitamin D deficiency and how it manifests itself, how it is administered, when excess vitamin D occurs.

Vitamin D3 Benefits

Vitamin D has many benefits for the body, from maintaining the health of the bone system and a strong immune system to the support offered in regulating insulin levels or supporting cardiovascular health. In the following, we will find out more details about the benefits of vitamin D and its role in the body.

  • VITAMIN D FOR THE BONE SYSTEM
Vitamin D contributes to regulating the level of calcium and maintaining an optimal level of phosphorus in the blood. These factors are essential for supporting the health of the bone system. Vitamin D is thus necessary to help the intestines to stimulate and absorb calcium that could be eliminated from the body by the kidneys.

In adults, vitamin D deficiency can manifest itself in the form of osteomalacia or softening of the bones. Osteomalacia leads to decreased bone density and muscle weakness.

Studies have shown that a high intake of vitamin D can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures in the elderly and menopausal women.

  • VITAMIN D FOR IMMUNITY
Vitamin D can support the health of the immune system. A study highlighted the fact that vitamin D contributes to protecting the body against the flu.

  • VITAMIN D IN DIABETES
Vitamin D can help protect the body against type 1 diabetes. A study conducted among children, in the first year of life, highlighted the fact that a daily dose of 2,000 IU of vitamin D can reduce the risk of type 1 diabetes with 78%

  • VITAMIN D IN DEPRESSION
Vitamin D has an important role in the formation and development of the brain and contributes to the proper functioning of the nervous system. Moreover, studies have highlighted the fact that vitamin D can contribute to reducing the manifestations associated with depression9.

  • VITAMIN D IN PREGNANCY
A recent study associated vitamin D deficiency with an increased risk of preeclampsia and premature birth among pregnant women. Also, a low level of vitamin D can contribute to the occurrence of gestational diabetes and bacterial vaginosis.

Therefore, pregnant women need an optimal dose of vitamin D. This contributes to the healthy development of the fetus.

  • VITAMIN D FOR ATHLETES
Studies have highlighted the fact that vitamin D provides support in increasing physical performance both at the level of the upper limbs and at the level of the lower limbs13. For this reason, athletes can consume supplements based on vitamin D, to increase resistance to effort.

SIGNS OF VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY

Signs of vitamin D deficiency can be the following:
  • The occurrence of infections and diseases regularly;
  • Feelings of fatigue;
  • Bone and back pain;
  • General bad condition;
  • Delayed wound healing;
  • Hair loss;
  • Muscle pain.
If the manifestations associated with vitamin D deficiency are not improved in time, the risk of complications increases. These can be cardiovascular, autoimmune or neurological diseases, infections or pregnancy complications.

Vitamin D3 Properties

  • vitamin D3 influences a considerable number of genes with a role in balancing the response of the innate and acquired immune system. It acts in a special way by activating some cells called T and B lymphocytes, but also some protein compounds called cathelicidins, with antimicrobial action
  • the active form of Vitamin D3 regulates the function of cathelicidins, expressed in different types of cells such as: macrophages (cells of the immune system), keratinocytes (skin cells), lung epithelial cells or certain placental cells
  • complementary, it controls the production of chemical messengers (cytokines) of the immune system
  • the action of Vitamin D3 at the bone level has been known for more than 50 years, through the positive impact it has on the absorption of the minerals so necessary for the bone system, calcium and phosphorus. Moreover, it influences the expression of an increased number of skeletal factors (VEGF - vascular endothelial growth factor, insulin-like growth factor-1 - insulin-like growth factor 1, etc.) with essential actions at bone level
  • as the bone system works in tandem with the muscle system, Vitamin D3 is involved in the normal development of the skeletal muscles, in supporting muscle performance and strength
  • the complexity of the roles of Vitamin D3 is manifested including at the level of the nervous system. Studies show that it intervenes in the production and release of certain factors with an important role in neuronal differentiation, as well as in the synthesis of some neurotransmitters (acetylcholine, catecholamines)
  • moreover, it also has a beneficial effect at the neuronal level, acting as a shield against free radicals and pro-inflammatory factors. The latter can be the basis of the development of immune or mood disturbances, due to the increased synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines that change the metabolism of brain cells
  • supporting a natural sleep
  • the need to maintain a normal serum level of Vitamin D3 is also supported by the action it has on the day-night cycle. Studies say that this can contribute to improving the duration and quality of sleep and reducing the time needed to fall asleep.
  • the presence of beneficial monounsaturated fats rich in Omega-9 fatty acids (oleic acid) existing in extra virgin olive oil support cardiovascular health
