Cat's Claw (Uncaria Tomentosa), also known as Matei's Claw, Una de Gato, is a liana that can be found in the Amazon basin and in the tropical forests of Central and South America. The name comes from its curved spines, similar to cat's claws. It can reach a length of up to 30 m and uses its thorns to cling to other plants. It has been used by Peruvian healers since 2000 years ago for its therapeutic properties, and since 1974 it has been introduced into the Western parapharmaceutical culture by the scientist Klaus Keplinger, who also undertook the first studies on this plant. The active principles are extracted especially from the bark of the plant.

MECHANISM OF ACTION
Matei Clove extract offers the following bioactive components: oxindolic alkaloids, phytosterols, triterpenes, proanthocyanins, tannins. These provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious and immunostimulating properties to products containing Cat's Claw extract.

DIRECTIONS
  • Anti-inflammatory: the administration of products based on Cat's Claw in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, for a period of up to 24 weeks, has shown a reduction in pain and recovery of mobility. The effects are stronger if administered together with allopathic treatment or with glucosamine sulfate.
  • Antitumor: in vitro and animal studies have highlighted a protective effect of epidermal cells against degradation caused by solar radiation. Experimental studies have shown that Gheara Matei extract reduces the proliferation (multiplication and development) of cells with tumor potential.
  • Anti-infectious: the alkaloids from Cat's Claw extract have shown anti-infective action on several viral strains, including Streptococcus Aureus, Streptococcus mutans, rhinovirus, Dengue virus. The results were obtained following in vitro studies, and the clinical studies will also be started.
  • Immunostimulation: Thanks to the anti-infectious and antioxidant effects exposed, Gheara Matei is a good candidate for immunostimulation schemes.
