Vitamin E is an essential nutrient for the proper functioning of the body, which performs, among other things, the role of antioxidant

Alpha-tocopheryl acetate (ATA), also known simply as tocopheryl acetate, is a form of vitamin E found in dietary supplements and skin care products. Tocopheryl Acetate is known for its antioxidant properties, whereby cells are protected from the damaging effects of compounds known as free radicals. It is also considered the most stable and active form of vitamin E and the best overall option for treating vitamin E deficiency.

In nature, vitamin E occurs as tocopheryl or tocotrienol. Both tocopheryl and tocotrienol have four forms, known as alpha, beta, gamma and delta. Alpha-tocopheryl (AT) is the most active form of vitamin E in humans. Alpha-tocopheryl acetate is more stable than alpha-tocopheryl, which means it can withstand environmental stresses such as heat, air and light better. This makes it ideal for use in supplements and fortified foods because it has a longer shelf life.

Vitamin E: role

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble nutrient found in many foods. In the body, it acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect cells from the action of free radicals.

Free radicals are atoms or molecules containing an odd number of electrons. They travel around the body looking for other electrons to pair with. Because of this, imbalances can sometimes occur, including at the cellular level. People are also exposed to environmental free radicals, such as cigarette smoke, polluted air and UV rays. Antioxidants, including vitamin E, are compounds that can keep free radicals in check. In short, vitamin E slows down the cellular ageing process.

The body also needs vitamin E to support its immune system so it can fight viruses and bacteria. Vitamin E helps maintain healthy blood vessels. Cells also need vitamin E to interact with each other and perform important functions in the body.

Vitamin E: benefits

  • May reduce oxidative stress
Free radicals affect the structure of healthy cells. These compounds also contribute to the development of chronic health problems such as cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer. Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between antioxidant defences and free radicals.

  • May help reduce osteoarthritis symptoms
Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition involving degeneration of the joints, which causes pain and stiffness. Scientists have studied the link between vitamin E and osteoarthritis symptoms and the results have been encouraging.

  • May be an adjuvant in diabetes management
Diabetes is a chronic condition involving insulin resistance and is linked to high levels of oxidative stress in the body.

Following several studies on vitamin E supplementation and different forms of diabetes (type 1 and type 2 diabetes), scientists have concluded that vitamin E may help delay the onset of the disease and may help reduce symptoms.

  • May delay the onset of Alzheimer's symptoms
There are studies showing that increased doses of vitamin E can delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease in people who have been diagnosed with a mild to moderate form of this neurodegenerative condition.

  • May help reduce dysmenorrhoea
Dysmenorrhoea is the pain experienced by women during their menstrual cycle. Menstrual pain is most commonly located in the lower abdomen and its intensity varies from case to case. Vitamin E supplements, taken two days before and three days after menstruation, can relieve the pain and intensity of menstrual bleeding.

  • May reduce symptoms of some eye conditions
Age-related macular degeneration is among the most common causes of vision loss in older people.

Study participants who suffered from macular degeneration and were at risk of developing a serious form of the disease noticed a reduction in symptoms of the condition after consuming a dietary supplement containing vitamin e in the form of tocopheryl acetate, combined with other antioxidants such as zinc and copper.
