Melatonin is secreted by a small gland called the pineal gland, located in the center of the brain. As the level of melatonin increases, drowsiness sets in. Several factors can affect the body's melatonin levels, and age is one of them - as people age, the incidence of sleep disorders increases, suggesting that restoring the level of this hormone may be helpful. Additionally, this hormone's level fluctuates throughout the night. It starts to rise at the onset of darkness, reaches its peak production between 2 and 4 in the morning, and declines in the second half of the night.
Melatonin is one of the most powerful antioxidants (even more potent than vitamins C and E and beta-carotene), being the only antioxidant capable of penetrating body cells and thus preventing damage caused by free radicals that reach deep into the morpho-functional structures of the body. Melatonin largely destroys the free radicals responsible for some degenerative diseases (cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, senile dementia, etc.).
Unlike other antioxidants, melatonin does not undergo a redox cycle, so it does not have the molecular ability to undergo reversible and successive reductions and oxidations. Once oxidized, melatonin can no longer be reduced to its previous state, thus after reacting with free radicals it has the capacity to form stable end products. Thus, melatonin falls into the category of "terminal" or "sacrificial" antioxidants, and its use in pathological states associated with oxidative stress, especially those accompanying the aging process: Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, atherosclerosis, etc., is currently being studied.
