Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is also known by specialists as hyaluronate or hyaluronan. It was first identified in 1934 by two researchers from Columbia University (New York), Karl Meyer and John W. Palmer. They apparently isolated hyaluronic acid from an area of ​​the eyes of cattle and measured many of its properties. Twenty years later, Meyer and Bernard Weissman discovered the same structure in umbilical cords after birth.


From a chemical point of view, hyaluronic acid is a molecule composed mostly of sugars (polysaccharide), which is normally found in the connective tissue of the body and in the skin. Basically, hyaluronic acid keeps the tissues hydrated and protects them from stretch marks/wrinkles. A single gram of hyaluronic acid can hold approximately six liters of water. In other words, the skin contains 50% hyaluronic acid because it is the largest organ of the human body and this is also where we find most of the water molecules.


At the same time, the highest concentrations are found in the joints and at eye level. Also, the skin of babies contains a large amount of hyaluronic acid, as well as the placenta and the umbilical cord.
