Standardized extract from Curcuma root, which supports the functions of the immune and nervous systems and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Turmeric root contains compounds known as curcuminoids that offer a multitude of health benefits. Because this formula contains more curcuminoids and a higher absorption capacity than standard curcumin, it can "amplify" the healthy benefits for the heart, mind, joints, cardiovascular system, immune system and more

Curcuminoids are composed of curcumin that have multiple health benefits. They help inhibit inflammation to support joint health and vital organ health, promote a healthy immune response, support cardiovascular health and encourage heart health. But the total amount of curcuminoids provided by standard curcumin supplements may be small.

Life Extension® has spent years searching for a superior, more readily available form of curcumin. Now, they have developed the powerful Curcumin Elite™ Turmeric Extract formula, which offers the maximum health benefits of curcuminoids. It does this by using sophisticated technologies that protect curcuminoids during digestion and deliver more curcuminoids in one dose.

The tricky part about releasing curcumin, which can be used by the body, is that these curcuminoid compounds undergo conjugation once they enter the body. This is a normal chemical reaction in which one compound attaches to another. However, the conjugation of curcuminoids is problematic, because conjugated curcuminoids do not necessarily offer the same health benefits as unconjugated ones.

This formula protects curcuminoids from conjugation by combining curcumin with a type of fiber derived from forest seeds called galactomannans. In this way, it improves both the availability and absorption capacity of curcuminoids, so that you can enjoy all the wonderful benefits that this Turmeric extract offers.

Clinical and pre-clinical data show that the combination of curcuminoids with galactomans produces 45.5 times more bioavailability and a wider distribution of free curcuminoids compared to standardized, common (unformulated) products. In a clinical study, more than 70% of total plasma curcuminoids were still in their free form five hours after ingestion. Several studies have shown or indicated that this type of turmeric extract can have multiple health benefits. These include:

1. Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory

Turmeric is used to fight inflammation. In one study, crude organic extracts of turmeric were found to inhibit lipopolysaccharide-induced production of pain and inflammation mediators such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2; from HL-60 cells. It was recently found that a turmeric extract inhibits the activation of human dendritic cells in response to inflammatory cytokines (Krasovsky et al. 2009). Most of its anti-inflammatory properties can be attributed to curcumin. In fact, at the right dose, curcumin can be an anti-inflammatory treatment more effective than common anti-inflammation drugs such as Advil (ibuprofen) and aspirin, according to one study.

Because chronic inflammation contributes to many chronic diseases, curcumin may help treat conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, and arthritis. Because of its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, curcumin may be a safe and effective long-term treatment option for people with osteoarthritis. At least that was the conclusion of the authors of a recent review of the clinical use of curcumin for the treatment of osteoarthritis. The review was first published online in August 2021 as part of the book series Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology.

2. Curcumin may help protect against heart disease

The effect of turmeric on myocardial apoptosis and cardiac function was examined in an ischemia and reperfusion model of myocardial injury. Turmeric administered for 1 month provided significant cardioprotection and functional recovery that was attributed to reduced cell death.

A previous study shows that curcumin may improve endothelial function, or the health of the thin membrane that lines the inside of the heart and blood vessels. This membrane plays a key role in regulating blood pressure. Lower endothelial function is associated with aging and an increased risk of heart disease. Thus, curcumin may help protect against age-related deterioration of heart function and reduce the likelihood of developing heart disease.

3. Curcumin may help prevent (and possibly treat) certain types of cancer

Curcumin has been shown to prevent carcinogenesis by affecting two processes: angiogenesis and cancer cell growth. Turmeric has activity against the development of skin cancer, breast cancer, oral cancer, and stomach cancer. Regarding the prevention of stomach cancer, the consumption of turmeric also acts indirectly by limiting H pylori infection. It prevents carcinogenesis at various stages, including inhibiting mutation, detoxifying carcinogens, decreasing cell proliferation, and inducing tumor cell apoptosis (Garg, Ingle, and Maru 2008). Turmeric extract prevents lymphoma-induced tumors. Since inflammatory phenomena are also associated with tumor development, anti-inflammatory compounds such as curcumin may play a role in the treatment and prevention of a variety of cancers, including colorectal, pancreatic, prostate, breast and gastric cancer.

4. Curcumin has an antibacterial and antifungal effect

Turmeric has strong antimicrobial properties, and studies have shown that it inhibits the growth of histamine-producing bacteria (Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus mirabilis) at a concentration of 5%. Turmeric has also been found to inhibit histamine production in Morganella morganii (the powerful histamine-producing bacteria).

Curcumin extracts have good antifungal activity against Trichophyton longifusus (Khattak et al. 2005). Assays using the agar disk diffusion method for the detection of antifungal activity showed that a crude ethanolic extract of turmeric killed all 29 clinical strains of dermatophytes tested.

5. Curcumin can help prevent diabetes

According to a previous review of studies, curcumin may help treat and prevent diabetes and related disorders, such as diabetic nephropathy (also called diabetic kidney disease), which affects people with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Authors A recent review notes that curcumin may be a good adjunct to diabetes prevention, being useful in prediabetes to improve insulin resistance and blood sugar control, and to lower blood lipids (fatty substances found in the blood). The findings were published in August 2021.

Curcumin may help prevent diabetes through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and may improve many of the factors that contribute to diabetes, including insulin resistance, high blood sugar, and hyperlipidemia ia (a medical term to describe elevated levels of fat in the blood).

6. Curcumin may help delay or remit Alzheimer's disease

Turmeric may even help protect your brain against common degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. Based on existing studies, curcumin has been used as a potential therapeutic agent for various neurological disorders such as dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and Huntington's disease (HD) due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-protein aggregation and increasing levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein found in the brain and spinal cord that plays a key role in maintaining healthy nerve cells (neurons) as well as regulating communication between nerve cells, which is essential for learning and memory.

Since common brain disorders such as Alzheimer's are associated with lower levels of BDNF, turmeric (specifically curcumin) may help delay or reverse brain degeneration.

7. Curcumin may play a role in treating rheumatoid arthritis

Curcumin shows promise as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic inflammatory disorder that usually affects the joints but can spread to other areas, such as the eyes, lungs, skin, heart and blood vessels. The disease causes painful swelling of the joints that can cause the bones to erode over time and eventually lead to physical deformities and disabilities.
