Red Clover normalizes the balance of hormones in the body, improves blood circulation and has benefits for joint and bone problems.
Red clover is a flowering plant that thrives in meadows and fields throughout Europe, North America, and North and Central Asia. It is mentioned in traditional medical texts of both Eastern and Western civilizations for a variety of ailments.
Red clover is considered one of the richest sources of isoflavones, water-soluble substances that act like estrogens (known generically as phytoestrogens). That is why red clover is used as a remedy for hot flashes, premenstrual syndrome, breast enlargement and health, as well as in reducing cholesterol, improving urine production and blood circulation, preventing osteoporosis, reducing the risk of blood clots, arterial plaque and of the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
There were studies that analyzed an isoflavone extract from red clover and the results suggested that it can significantly reduce hot flashes in women during menopause. Also, considering that menopause can increase women's risk of osteoporosis (significant bone loss), some studies show that isoflavone extract from red clover can slow bone loss and even stimulate mineral density in premenopausal or perimenopausal women. The reason could be the estrogenic effect of isoflavones in red clover, and red clover can also have a direct effect by preventing the deterioration of existing bone mass.
Red clover can block enzymes thought to promote prostate cancer in men. It has definitely been proven to have a limiting effect on the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia, a non-cancerous tumor of the prostate gland. An enlarged prostate can influence the urinary flow of men, making it weaker or interrupted, favoring urine loss or creating the sensation of urinating even after emptying the bladder. For most men, prostate enlargement is a phenomenon that occurs naturally with age.
Some studies show that taking red clover can reduce the level of "bad" cholesterol (LDL) and increase the level of "good" cholesterol (HDL) in the body. In addition, red clover can encourage bile acid secretion. Cholesterol being a major component of bile acid, a higher production of bile acid means more cholesterol used and less released into the body.
In addition, clover also contains small amounts of substances called coumarins, which prevent blood thickening and coagulation. Thus, the possibility of the formation of blood clots and arterial plaque can be reduced. Plaque is an accumulation of blood cells, fats and other substances that accumulate in blood vessels, reducing or blocking blood circulation. Red clover helps the arteries remain strong and flexible (a quality called "arterial elasticity"), potentially preventing some plaque deposits that can lead to heart attack or stroke.
