Black cumin, negrusca or negrilica, as it is popularly called, is a universal remedy for some of the most common ailments

Recent scientific studies indicate that black cumin seed oil has phenolic compounds and fatty acids that contribute to its ability to support balanced immune system responses. Studies also show that black cumin seed oil may help support a healthy vascular system. Black cumin seeds have been traditionally used in the Middle East, Asia and Africa for thousands of years.

The benefits of black cumin oil are explained by the presence of three natural phytonutrients: thymoquinone (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic), thymohydroquinone (a potent inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase) and thymol (virucidal effect).

Thymoquinone - An active ingredient in black samanta studied since the 1960s. It is well known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties which are helpful in encephalomyelitis, diabetes, asthma and carcinogenesis. Interestingly, thymoquinone works effectively against free radicals or superoxide radicals, in addition to maintaining the antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and glutathione-S-transferase. Both glutathione peroxidase and S-transferase are valued as important detoxifiers that contribute to antioxidant defence systems at the cellular level as they protect the liver from toxins.

Thymohydroquinone - A relative of thymoquinone, thymohydroquinone is one of the most potent natural acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors on the planet. AChE inhibitors are substances that inhibit the activity of enzymes, which increases the duration and amount that the neurotransmitter acetylcholine remains active in the brain.

Thymol - This active ingredient, which gives thyme essential oil its medicinal properties, is a natural mono terpene with many abilities. For example,
  • It is used as a tuberculocidal and virucidal agent to annihilate Mycobacterium tuberculosis and various other viruses.
  • It is used as a medical and general disinfectant.
  • It is a pesticide that degrades quickly and does not persist.
  • It is used in food flavourings, perfumes, mouthwashes and even cosmetics.

The most important benefits of Black cumin oil

Of the many benefits that black cumin seed oil has for the body, there are 6 that stand out in the scientific literature, namely the ability to prevent cancer, diabetes, obesity, hair loss, skin conditions and infections with Methicillin-resistant S. aureus.

  • Cancer
Researchers in Croatia evaluated the anti-tumour activity of thymoquinone and thymohydroquinone and found that these two phytochemicals in black seed oil can reduce tumour cells by up to 52%.

"The anti-tumour effects of thymoquinone were investigated on xenograft tumour models for colon, prostate, pancreatic and lung cancer. The combination of thymoquinone and chemo-therapeutic drugs may have greater therapeutic effects and reduce the toxicity of the latter."

  • Liver health
The liver is one of the most important organs in the body. Virtually every toxin is processed by the liver, and the bile in the liver is vital for digesting fats and keeping the mind and body happy and healthy. For those experiencing poor liver function due to side effects of medication, alcohol consumption or disease, black seed oil can speed up the healing process. In a recent study, researchers found that black seed oil helps the liver function and prevents it from becoming damaged or diseased.

  • Diabetes
As a recent article published in the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism points out, researchers at the Indian Council of Medical Research point out that Black cumin seed oil "causes partial gradual regeneration of pancreatic beta cells, increases reduced serum insulin concentrations and decreases elevated serum glucose." This is quite important because Nigella sativa is one of the few substances that studies suggest can prevent both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

In fact, according to another study, black seeds "improve glucose tolerance as well as metformin; however, they have no negative side effects and very low toxicity" Which is particularly important because metformin, one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for type 2 diabetes, can cause a number of side effects including: stomach pain, muscle aches, metallic taste in the mouth, headaches, burns, gas/ indigestion

  • Weight loss
One of the specialist journals published a study in June that systematically reviewed the existing literature in search of herbs with anti-obesity properties and found that black seed oil is, along with green tea, black tea and Camellia Sinensis, among the most effective natural remedies available.

Although not known to be a treatment for obesity, black seed is a very good anti-inflammatory that helps people lose weight in the same way it helps diabetics. Specifically, by decreasing the following appetite triggers, black seed oil has helped millions of people shed excess weight:

  • Parul
Perhaps one of the most unique benefits of black seed oil is its unparalleled ability to restore hair loss. No one understands exactly why this happens, but one can suspect it has to do with its powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. By strengthening the hair follicles, it is easy to understand that black seed oil strengthens the hair root.

  • Skin
Produced in the retina, choroid and epidermis, melanin has pigments that protect the skin from damage. It is best known for giving colour to the eyes. Since it promotes and inhibits melanogenesis (melanin production), black seed oil has healing effects on skin and other cells.

  • S. aureus infections
Of all the drug-resistant microbes that black seed oil can kill, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the most important. MRSA is plaguing hospitals and clinics around the world because common staph infections are becoming resistant to common antibiotics. Older populations are especially at risk because these infections are associated with invasive procedures such as surgery, intravenous intubation and artificial joints. Mainly due to weakened immunity, the growing population of elderly citizens has made MRSA a global public health risk.

In a study in Pakistan, researchers took several antibiotic-resistant strains of S. aureus and found that each was sensitive to Nigella Sativa, demonstrating that black seed oil can slow or even stop the progression of S. aureus infection.
