Willow Bark Extract Benefits

Studies suggest that willow bark may be helpful for the following conditions:
 

• Headaches

Willow bark has been shown to relieve headaches. There is some evidence that it is less likely to cause gastrointestinal side effects than other painkillers such as ibuprofen (Advil) and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
 

• Back pain

Willow bark appears to be effective for back pain. In a well-designed study of nearly 200 people with low back pain, those given willow bark experienced significant pain relief compared to those given a placebo. People who received higher doses of willow bark (240 mg salicin - 4 capsules) had more significant pain relief than those who received lower doses (120 mg salicin - 2 capsules).
 

• Osteoarthritis

Several studies show that salvia is more effective in reducing pain caused by osteoarthritis than placebo. In a small study of people with osteoarthritis of the neck or lower back, those who received willow bark experienced a significant improvement in symptoms compared to those who received placebo. A similar study of 78 people hospitalized with osteoarthritis of the knee or hip joint found that people who received willow bark had significant pain relief compared to those who received placebo.
 

• Heart health

It is well known that low doses of aspirin are taken as a preventative measure as well as first aid in the event of a heart attack, as it helps reduce the risk of internal clotting. Since the salicylates in aspirin are derived from willow bark, it goes without saying that this plant has the same effect on the heart as aspirin. This means it may be effective in reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
 

• Menstrual cramps

Painful menstrual cramps are usually the result of inflammation of the uterine lining and contractions that are triggered by prostaglandins. As we know that willow bark regulates prostaglandin production and reduces inflammation, it will help to soothe not only cramps but also other PMS symptoms.
