The HPA axis is responsible for the fight or flight response to stress. Under the influence of this information, it releases a hormone called Corticotrophin Releasing Hormone (CRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to release another hormone called Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH). ACTH transmits the signal further to the adrenals and causes them to release cortisol and catecholamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline). When stress levels are high, they lead to an imbalance in the HPA axis.
