Pantethine is one of the most effective forms of vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) with excellent absorption in the body. This substance mainly serves as a precursor to coenzyme A which is essential in the body for energy production and the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. It is also associated with optimal body fat storage and cholesterol levels, which are essential for heart and blood vessel health.

Pantethine supports lipid metabolism through its ability to increase the level of Coenzyme A (CoA), a cofactor involved in several metabolic pathways, including carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. CoA combines with acetyl groups to form Acetyl Coenzyme A, a key participant in energy production through its role in the Krebs (citric acid) cycle in the mitochondria.

There are quite a few studies that suggest that taking pantethine as a supplement can help lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. In most of these studies, people taking pantethine had high cholesterol levels or were classified as being at risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The doses of pantethine taken in these studies ranged from 300 to 1,200 mg per day—sometimes divided into smaller doses taken two to four times throughout the day—for up to a year.

Pantethine is also considered an "anti-stress" vitamin, as it supports the healthy function of the adrenal cortex and hormone synthesis, especially during periods of stress. Pantethine seems to facilitate the metabolism of fatty acids by activating coenzyme A, which promotes the transport of fatty acid carnitine into the mitochondria and the subsequent mitochondrial oxidation of fatty acids. Consequently, it was found that pantethin supplementation supports good cardiovascular health. In addition, increases in beneficial HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1 were associated with pantethine supplementation.

The presence of pantethine facilitates the production of apolipoprotein A1 by the body, the main protein component of HDL, which promotes the removal of cholesterol from tissues in the liver for excretion. Pantothenic acid deficiency can lead to adrenal atrophy, which is characterized by increased fatigue, sleep disorders, nausea and abdominal discomfort.
