Borage Seed Oil and Omega 6 contribute to reducing inflammation in the body, have an antioxidant and protective role at the DNA level
Borage is a cold-pressed, hexane-free, stabilized oil from the seeds of borage (Borago officinalis). Borage oil is the highest source of GLA available. GLA is an important omega-6 fatty acid required for the production of beneficial prostaglandins (hormone-like compounds) that play an important role in promoting skin health and immune function. Borage oil provides nutritional support during mild discomforts associated with PMS.
Borago oil is obtained by pressing the seeds of the Borago officinalis plant found on the European and North American continents. Also known as borage seed oil, it is rich in gamma-linoleic acid, a type of essential fatty acid from the Omega-6 group that contributes to the health of the body.
Borage oil is used for many purposes such as reducing inflammation, soothing acne, soothing breast pain, alleviating eczema, as an adjunctive remedy for menopause, alleviating rosacea and others. Borago oil is available in liquid form or in the form of gelatin capsules, which can be consumed as a dietary supplement.
As mentioned earlier, Borago oil is rich in GLA, or linolenic acid. This substance acts like a hormone in the body, promoting the reduction of inflammation often associated with skin conditions or cardiovascular problems. Although GLA is also present in other oils, experts believe that Borago oil has the highest content of linolenic acid.
In natural medicine, Borago oil is used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, cough, depression, premenstrual syndrome, atopic dermatitis and menopausal symptoms. It is also commonly used for skin and hair conditions such as eczema, acne, rosacea and excessive hair loss.
For rheumatoid arthritis, borage oil appears to be a promising remedy. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation in the joints. Although most of the scientific data comes from studies, researchers are confident in the benefits of this oil by alleviating inflammation and joint tenderness in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
An interesting aspect is the potential beneficial effect that Borago oil can have on the development and growth of premature babies, especially boys. According to a study1 published in the Journal of Pediatrics, milk formula enhanced with Borago oil, as well as fish oils, can support the normal development of premature babies.
Last but not least, Borago oil appears to reduce the duration of severe symptoms in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which also shortens their time in the intensive care unit. According to a study of 146 patients in the United States, those who received a combination of EPA and GLA fatty acids showed a significant improvement in health status and spent less time in intensive care compared to the control group.
Borage GLA Benefits
- maintaining normal blood cholesterol concentrations
- supporting joint, skin, pulmonary or intestinal comfort (maintains joint mobility, skin and mucous membrane health, normal intestinal transit and absorption):
- offers support in limiting the conversion of arachidonic acid into compounds involved in the inflammatory process (PGE2 and leukotriene B4) through the action of dihomo-gamma-linoleic acid (DGLA), a metabolite of GLA
- maintaining the structure of the peripheral nerves against the action of the increased level of glucose in the blood
- favoring attention, memory, the ability to concentrate and learn:
- GLA maintains the structure and normal functions of the neuronal membrane
- supporting the normal structure of the prostate, breasts and colon by supporting the limitation of the action of the ornithine decarboxylase enzyme
- maintaining the normal level of GLA in the body, which can be influenced by various external or internal factors (insufficient intake, disturbing factors, various pre-existing manifestations, aging, etc.)
