Hesperidin is used for blood vessel disorders such as haemorrhoids, varicose veins and poor venous circulation (venous stasis).
Hesperidin is a bioflavonoid, a type of plant pigment found mainly in citrus fruits. Oranges, grapefruit, lemons and mandarins all contain hesperidin, which is also available in supplement form. Hesperidin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
Hesperidin has beneficial effects on blood vessels. It is touted as a natural remedy for a range of health problems including allergies, haemorrhoids, high blood pressure, hot flushes, hay fever, sinusitis, symptoms associated with menopausal changes, premenstrual syndrome and varicose veins. Hesperidin also improves circulation, reduces inflammation and helps fight cancer.
Benefits of hesperidin
- Supports the circulatory system
Research has shown that hesperidin can help reduce inflammation, with potential to restore normal blood flow for people with venous insufficiency. Symptoms of chronic venous disease could be improved by taking hesperidin.
- Help with leg pain and swelling
Recent studies have shown that hesperidin has been shown to reduce pain and improve circulation in varicose ulcers, varicose veins, oedema, as well as reducing the heaviness felt in the legs and relieving swelling and cramps. Hesperidin also seems to give good results for those suffering from restless legs syndrome.
- Fight against hemorrhoids
Hesperidin is helpful in the fight against internal and external haemorrhoids. Current research offers encouraging data in this regard. Administration of these flavonoids has led to relief of unpleasant symptoms, less pain, itching and bleeding.
Regular consumption of hesperidin may lower blood pressure and improve blood vessel function, suggests a study of overweight men published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2011. After four weeks of daily hesperidin consumption, participants' diastolic blood pressure was significantly lower and endothelial function (after eating a meal) improved significantly.
Hesperidin also shows promise for people who have suffered a heart attack, suggests a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition in 2015. For this study, people who suffered a heart attack took either a hesperidin supplement or a placebo for four weeks. At the end of the study, those taking hesperidin had significantly lower levels of some inflammatory markers.
Consumption of hesperidin, which is naturally rich in bioflavonoids, may be beneficial for cognitive function in healthy older adults, according to a small study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2015. Cognitive function was significantly better after eight weeks of consuming hesperidin, compared to eight weeks of consuming a low-bioflavonoid placebo.
Hesperidin - Other possible benefits
- Hesperidin could also be beneficial in other conditions, such as lymphatic oedema - inflammation of the lymphatic system, varicocele - swelling of the veins in the scrotum, nosebleeds - epistaxis, pelvic pain, and rosacea.
- Back pain can also be reduced with the help of hesperidin, at least that's what the study suggests.
- Citrus fruits may play an important role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. This means that hesperidin may have an effect on markers of heart disease.
- Maintaining normal blood pressure and blood vessel function with hesperidin-based supplements led researchers to conclude that this natural pigment could prevent a new heart attack in people who have had one, as well as maintain the health of blood vessels and the circulatory system, while reducing cholesterol levels.
- In terms of body weight control, there are indications that hesperidin may help those diagnosed with obesity.
