Potassium contributes to the regulation of blood pressure and heart rate, aids digestion, balances the body's water level and pH. In addition, it can improve muscle contractions and send nerve impulses.

Potassium is a mineral with a fundamental role for the body, because it intervenes in all metabolic processes and helps the proper functioning of the heart muscle, as well as the brain. Potassium plays an important role in nerve conduction, muscle contraction, acid-base balance, osmotic pressure, protein anabolism, and glycogen formation.

Potassium increases diuresis and helps eliminate sodium, which is often in excess in the body, thus ensuring an effective elimination of toxins and normal activity of the adrenal glands. All potassium contained in food is absorbed in the small intestine. Potassium from food is eliminated renally within 24 hours. The kidneys do not conserve potassium and when there is inadequate dietary intake a severe deficiency will occur.

All body cells, especially muscle tissue, require high levels of potassium to stay healthy. A proper balance of calcium, sodium, and potassium in the blood plasma is necessary for proper cardiac function. Potassium contributes to a number of essential body functions, including the following: blood pressure, normal water balance, muscle contractions, nerve impulses, digestion, heart rate, and pH (acidity and alkalinity) balance.

Potassium can provide numerous benefits, including:

  • It could reduce blood pressure, a fact that can help those who face hypertension; can reduce the risk of developing heart diseases and having a heart attack;
  • It could fight against kidney stones;
  • It could help prevent osteoporosis;
  • It could reduce water retention; this occurs when excess fluids accumulate in the body.

Potassium is an essential mineral needed by all tissues in the body. It is on the third place in the list of the most abundant minerals in the body. About 98% of the amount of potassium in the body is found in the cells, and of this, 80% can be observed in the cells of the muscle tissue. The rest of the amount of potassium, 20%, is in the bones, liver and red cells.

It is, at the same time, an electrolyte. More precisely, potassium intervenes through impulses at the level of cells and nerve functions, helps muscles to contract and contributes to the regulation of blood pressure. Since it cannot be produced by the body, it is important to have a healthy and balanced diet, in which you include foods that ensure the optimal level of potassium.

If the amount of potassium in the body is too low, you can end up developing temporary or long-term health problems. The kidneys are the ones that regulate the potassium levels in the body, due to the fact that they eliminate the excess through the urine.

Potassium also fulfills other roles such as:

  • it is an essential element for growth, because the formation of new cells is equivalent to the retention of K in the cells
  • participates in muscle protein synthesis and muscle contraction
  • participates in the regulation of neuromuscular activity
  • participates in maintaining the acid-base balance, entering into the constitution of some buffer systems
  • participates in the regulation of the synthesis of hormones such as: insulin, glucagon, somatotropic hormone.

Potassium deficiency (Hypopotasemia)

It is a condition that can put patients' lives at risk. The decrease in the plasma concentration of K can occur either by increasing the migration of K from the extracellular space to the intracellular one (with the maintenance of the total concentration of K in the body in normal values), or by depletion of K. Most of the time hypokalemia occurs by the migration of potassium in the cell, gastrointestinal (vomiting, gastric aspiration, diarrhea) or renal losses. The first element in elucidating the etiology of hypokalemia is the assessment of urinary potassium excretion.

The main effects in the case of hypokalemia are cardiovascular and neuromuscular, secondary to metabolic, hormonal and renal effects. Cardiac arrhythmias, decreased neuromuscular excitability, dynamic ileus have been reported. In patients with severe hepatic impairment, hypokalemia may precipitate the onset of encephalopathy.

The goals of treatment in the case of hypokalemia are: limiting potassium losses and replacing already existing losses. Additional potassium administration is indicated when hypokalemia is severe or associated with arrhythmias.
