Inositol influences the action of insulin, modulates chemical messengers in the brain such as serotonin and dopamine and is a major component of cell membranes

Inositol or inositol, sometimes called vitamin B8, occurs naturally in food, but can also be produced by the body from the carbohydrates we eat. Although it is sometimes called vitamin B8, inositol is not actually a vitamin and is not part of the B vitamin complex, but rather a type of sugar with several important functions in the body. Inositol plays a structural role in the body, being a major component of cell membranes.

Inositol can help balance important brain chemicals, including those thought to affect mood, such as serotonin and dopamine. Given that some people with depression, anxiety or compulsive disorders have lower levels of inositol in the brain, supplementation with this substance could be an alternative treatment for mental health conditions, especially since it appears to have fewer side effects than traditional medicines.

What are the benefits and uses of inositol?

  • Effectively treats PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and improves fertility
The best-known benefit of inositol is its ability to treat polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a very common syndrome that can affect up to 21% of women in a certain population. Some reports show that up to 72 percent of women who have PCOS have experienced some form of infertility.
There have been at least 14 high-quality human studies that have tested the benefits of inositol for PCOS. A 2016 review of 12 of these randomized, controlled trials found that this supplement can restore spontaneous ovulation and improve fertility in women with PCOS.

  • It can reduce the symptoms of neuro-psychiatric diseases
Due to its interaction with the central nervous system, inositol has shown possible effectiveness against certain types of mental illness.

  • It can be beneficial in the treatment of cancer
Combining inositol with another version, IP6 (also known as inositol hexaphosphate), may have anticancer effects and may improve the action of chemotherapy against cancer, according to a 2003 pilot study published in The Journal of Nutrition. IP6 plus inositol improves the anticancer effect of conventional chemotherapy, controls cancer metastases and improves quality of life.

  • It could improve insulin sensitivity in diabetes
In almost all cases where insulin resistance is present, there is an increased urinary excretion of inositol metabolites. Because of this information, it is believed that people with insulin resistance are in a state of relative inositol deficiency due to an increased rate of excretion. Practically, this means that the lack of inositol in the body seems to be closely related to insulin resistance. This includes insulin resistance caused by diabetes, PCOS and even preeclampsia.

  • May reduce symptoms of metabolic syndrome
For some women (even those without PCOS), it seems possible that inositol may be beneficial in treating metabolic syndrome. In particular, postmenopausal women who have or are at risk of this condition can benefit from the positive effects of inositol.

Inositol Properties

  • maintaining the female hormonal balance and balancing the manifestations associated with changes in the menstrual and premenstrual cycle, menopause, such as: the development of body hair and sebum secretion above physiological levels, etc.
  • supporting the male hormonal balance, through:
  • maintaining the physiological level of testosterone and estrogen hormones, as well as their ratio (favors cellular sensitivity to insulin)
  • supporting sperm mobility
  • maintaining the normal liver detoxification process, by:
  • supporting the emulsification of blood lipids; offers support in case of their accumulation in the liver (lipotropic activity)
  • favoring the elimination from the body of the final products of metabolism (inositol is the source of glucuronic acid)
  • balancing the emotional states and the behavioral manifestations associated with them (suffocation feeling, fear, food consumption above normal limits, etc.)
  • favors the transmission of nerve impulses (communication between neurons)
  • maintains the sensitivity of brain serotonin receptors
  • supports the normal level of intracellular calcium
  • supporting the structure of nerve cells in the face of an increased level of glucose in the blood
  • normal cell division through involvement in the cellular signaling system
  • maintaining the structure and good functioning of the lungs
