Pine Bark Extract or Pine Bark Extract Now® is sourced from the inner bark of the Chinese red pine (Pinus massoniana), renowned for its potent polyphenolic flavonoid constituents, which neutralize free radicals, namely oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC). Pine Bark Extract has demonstrated a reduction in diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition affecting the retinal capillaries, leading to vision loss. This condition primarily affects individuals with diabetes. The study was conducted by Dr. Robert Steigerwalt and colleagues at the University of Italy, G. D'Annunzio, who investigated the effects of pine bark extract (Pine Bark Extract) on diabetic retinopathy. Subjects in the early stages of this condition were administered Pycnogenol or a placebo for two months. The result, published in the December 2009 issue of the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology and Therapeutics, demonstrated that patients receiving Pine Bark Extract experienced improved visual acuity or clarity of vision compared to the placebo group.

A group of researchers in the UK conducted a study involving 21 patients over 8 weeks to observe the Pine Bark Extract response in patients with severe chronic venous insufficiency (including swollen ankle and a history of venous ulceration). On average, patients had symptoms for almost 6 years. Studies revealed that after treatment with Pine Bark Extract, all patients showed a significant improvement in edema and circulatory problems, in comparison with the control group, which showed no change. Researchers concluded that Pine Bark Extract plays a significant role in the management of venous insufficiency and could also be utilized in the prevention of ulcers.
