Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis), also known as Orange Root or Yellow Puccoon, is a plant found in Canada and the eastern United States, preferring shaded, wooded areas. Goldenseal has a long history as a medicinal plant, used by the Cherokee Indians for colds, digestive disorders, and genital diseases. In 1798, it began to attract attention and was extensively marketed as a remedy for a wide range of conditions. By the end of the 19th century, it was on the brink of extinction due to aggressive use. Nowadays, Goldenseal used in pharmaceutical formulations is harvested from specialized plantations dedicated to cultivating and growing this plant².

In the current market of dietary supplements, Goldenseal is called a "natural antibiotic." This title is due to its content of berberine, an active substance with anti-infective, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic properties.
